THE LITTLE DOG LAUGHED 2019 Fall Play

Synopsis: A little knowledge is a dangerous thing - especially in the hands of a budding psychoanalyst! Laurie Huntington is nineteen, bright, and impersonally scientific. Her family has its faults, but Laurie can analyze them - to death! Home from college for the summer, she's turned the house into an experimental maze. When Laurie administers one of her ink blot tests to her mother's friends who are important to her father's getting a much needed bank loan, matters explode!

Note from Director: Our production of the Ken and Vera Tarpley comedy is set in 1940s small-town USA. The story centers on Laurie, a sophomore psychology student, who comes home for the summer and can’t resist applying her budding diagnostic skills on family, friends and even on her mother’s tea party guests! Psychology in the 1940’s was in a totally different place compared to now. The idea of administering ink blot tests, that are not commonly used today, is a fun concept for our students. The old style psychology alongside a “tea party” with the socialites of the town, have transformed our rehearsal room with visions of the past.

This is an appropriate reaction considering the perusal script was from the personal collection of Mrs. Art Stucke who was the founding director of the Carroll Freedom Players. Mrs. Stucke directed Carroll’s performance of The Little Dog Laughed on April 20 and 21, 1963. The cost of admission was only $1.00 for adults, and 50 cents for high school students! It was the first 3 act play presented on Carroll’s stage.

Although time has seen many changes at Carroll, we are proud of the legacy of the Carroll Freedom Players and are looking forward to presenting this production on the same stage. We are delighted to share this warm-hearted, family friendly story with our audience!
